Friday night, Wes and I had to pick up tables for the yard sale on Saturday. Why the coach gets to handle these details I still cannot fathom, but we did. Since I didn't work on Friday and there was no way I could pick up all these tables by myself (10), Wes had to go with me. I drove out to his work at 4, then we dropped my car off at his cousin's house. We got into the jeep and headed off to get tables. We were almost to Hwy 12 (the point at which I was going to call the people with the tables to let them know we were on our way -- at that point we would be 15-30 min. from AC), when his cousin called. I had parked where I thought I would be out of the way, but in reality I had blocked them in so they couldn't get out of the garage. Wes and I got off at our exit, turned around, and got back on the road, heading back to his cousin's house. Forty-five minutes later we were on our way again to pick up the tables, after moving the car. Everything else went smoothly. We just didn't get home until after 9 pm, but that's okay.
So on Saturday, Wes and I had to be in Cheatham County (1 hr from our house) by 6:15 am to get the yard sale started. Wes and I were up by 4:45 am, gathered our junk for the yard sale, and left the house by 5:15 -- stopping to get gas and breakfast on the way. We again had just gotten to Hwy 12, when we passed a state trooper. Wes was going 65 (he didn't know the speed limit on that road is only 50 at that point -- he doesn't drive that way often). Of course, we got pulled over, and Wes received his FIRST EVER speeding ticket. He spent the rest of the morning fuming.
After teaching the girls how to actually sell their items (we watched at least 3 people come, look, and leave without buying anything before one of the moms, Wes, and I jumped in), we had to leave at 10:15 am for the dentist. Driving an hour back to our dentist's office, Wes and I both had our teeth cleaned, leaving the yard sale in the care of the parents. Cleanings went fine -- though the dentist is still watching my gums and Wes has two cavities (of course, he hadn't been in 2.5 years!). We headed back to Cheatham County at 1:00 to finish up the yard sale and help the girls take everything down. They had barely sold anything since we had left, and it was obvious that they hadn't even tried to make sales to the few people that were milling around.
At 2:30 pm, we began to take down the sale. Two of the girls had already left -- one for her softball banquet and the other because the first girl was her ride. My captain and her mom began to pack up the items they had brought even though we had originally said that anything that didn't sell would be going to charity. Her mom wanted to have another yard sale in a few weeks. I nixed that idea -- we didn't make nearly enough money and Wes and I did most of the work. The captain and her mom were gone before 3. That left Wes and I, one of my girls and her mom to finish tearing everything down, to get the charity items across the street, to count the money, and to return the tables to their owners. Needless to say, Wes and I weren't pleased. We had worked hard to try to make the yard sale a success and barely received any help in return from the people for whom the sale was benefiting. I am definitely sticking by my original statement that we won't be having another sale this year. Maybe next year, but definitely not this one. Too much work and not enough help or return.
In the end, we made about $215, which every little bit helps. Wes and I got a used laptop for $5, which even if we have to gut it and start over will be cheaper than buying a new one. And I got to spend the day with my hubby. Not an over-all successful day, but at least we are done with it for this year.
